Some are based in the UK, some are global. Some contests are of high renown like the BBC Short Story Award or the Bridport Prizeoffering huge prizes, and some are lesser known, but offer great opportunities for newer writers to become published authors. I will try and keep this list up to date, but please check the rules and dates on the different competition websites before entering.
The country each competition is run from is listed so you know which global market you are submitting to. You can learn lots more about the rules for each individual competition by visiting the different websites. I have provided links to make this resource as easy to use as possible :. Not long after its launch, I updated the page into sections as detailed in the quick links at the top of the page, and put the competitions in alphabetical order.
Discontinued competitions now appear in their own list at the bottom of the page for reference only. I hope this makes the lists easier to use. Also, as the page is getting larger and the lists are getting longer, it is becoming harder for me to maintain.
I'll do my best to check all the links regularly, but if you spot any mistakes, outdated information or broken links, please let me know. I'm fortunate enough to have been published through some of the competitions in the lists below. In these instances, there will be links to the published stories and more detailed information about my direct experiences with the competition in question.

To Hull And Back is a biennial humorous short story competition that offers 'the greatest literary prize in the known macrocosm'. You can decide for yourself whether that's true or not To my knowledge, To Hull And Back is the only regular short story competition that celebrates humorous writing.

King references many key texts in English and American literature — and for this reason, this book would make an interesting — and very readable — addition to GCSE and A level courses.If you are looking to take your writing to the next level, then entering a writing competition often provides that extra impetus to refine your work.
This is by no means a full list of competitions. Some writing competitions require an entry fee. This seems to be the norm these days and there are credible competitions that require an entry fee. Always check that you are comfortable with sending money to the organizers if this is the case.

This quarterly contest from Scribble magazine is for stories in any genre and on any subject, running to no more than 3, words.Writing competitions are a great motivational tool. With numerous awards for every type of writing, from novelsto short stories to poetry running throughout the year, it can feel daunting to sift through them all.

How to enter : The maximum length of submissions is 4, words does not include title and there is no minimum length. Stories can be on any theme or subject and are welcome in any style including graphic, verse or genre-based. One of the biggest single poem competitions in the world, the National Poetry Competition is open to anyone aged 17 or older.
The competition is for previously unpublished poems of up to 40 lines in length. As well as the top prize, there are nine other small prizes for second place, third place, and commended entries. How to enter: Online or by post, along with a completed entry form. Have you written a novel that is self-published or yet to be published? If yes, this is the prize for you. The First Novel Prize aims to discover a powerful new voice in fiction writing. There are first, second and third prizes up for grabs.

Applications can be submitted by post, in person or online.
Have you started or completed an as yet unpublished novel with a cracking first chapter? Is your opening guaranteed to grab attention? How to enter: Submit an opening chapter up to 3, words, plus a one page synopsis outlining the balance of the story.
An international prize for emerging novelists writing for adults or young adults. How to enter: Submit the first 5, words of your novel in progress, plus a one page synopsis. Entries accepted online and by post.
All genres welcome. Well, we had to mention it, didn't we?If more than one story is submitted, only the first story received will be considered.

This means the author must previously have had a work or works of prose fiction, drama or poetry published by an established UK book publisher including e-book and audio publicationpublished in print or online by an established printed newspaper, magazine, journal, periodical in the UK, or broadcast by a UK national broadcaster or content provider. The prior record of publication must be the sole work of the author and not written as part of a writing team.
It does not include podcasts. Further, by submitting the Entry Form the entrant warrants that they or the story submitted will not bring the BBC or Cambridge University into disrepute. Breach of any of these warranties will result in disqualification of the entry. Proof of identity and eligibility may be requested. The entrant agrees to accept the BBC's appropriate standard terms and conditions for these uses. Further to this, by submitting the story the entrant confirms there is no restriction in respect of the story, which would prevent the above.
The rights for publication of each shortlisted story will be non-exclusive, with no bar on publication rights elsewhere, and the Anthology will include full acknowledgement of any existing publication containing the shortlisted and winning stories. The copyright of each individual story featured in the Anthology remains with the authors, and they retain the moral right to be identified as the authors of the stories.
The shadowing scheme enables 16 — 18 year olds from selected secondary schools and colleges around the UK to read, listen to, discuss and critique the stories shortlisted for the National Short Story Award.
Children’s Writing Competitions
The text and audio of the stories will be made available to the participating schools, along with supporting resources and events, to afford the students an enriching experience that brings literature to life. The Award aims to support and celebrate excellence in the short story form. Stage 1: All eligible entries will be read and judged anonymously by at least two 2 readers against the Award reading guidelines.
Stage 2: A longlist of approximately the best fifty 50 stories will then be put forward to the judging panel this longlist is not officially published. The judging panel will read all longlisted stories anonymously. Stage 3: Judges may also review the full list of authors who entered to the Award, in order to call in a maximum of five 5 entries each which were not longlisted in Stage 1.
This collective pool of a maximum of twenty five 25 stories will be randomly and anonymously allocated to individual judges for consideration alongside the longlist. Should an individual judge decide that an entry merits collective consideration, the entry will be circulated to all judges.
Stage 4: The judges will together discuss and select a shortlist of five 5 outstanding short stories submitted for the Award. Stage 5: The judging panel will together discuss and agree on the winning story from the shortlist of five 5.
In reaching its decisions, the judges will adopt a preferential voting system. In the unlikely event of there being a tie, the Chairperson will have the casting vote. The judging panel will be appointed by the Award team, comprised of representatives from the BBC and Cambridge University. The judging panel will include a representative from the BBC and distinguished literary professionals. All judges are required to declare any financial interests in relation to any entrants.
Any permitted reference to the Award by the winner and shortlisted writers will be outlined by the BBC. Please see:. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt. Entries successfully submitted online will receive an automated acknowledgement message on-screen; entrants will not receive a message to the email address provided. Please check back on the BBC website for updates.
In addition, if it is deemed appropriate, a list of stories highly commended by the judges will also be published on both websites as an addendum to the announcement of the shortlist.
